In December 1973, a big problem happened at Toyokawa Shinkin Bank in Aichi Prefecture. It began when a high school boy made a joke to a girl, who was going to work at the bank, saying that the bank was not safe. That night, the girl asked her family member if the bank had money problems. Then, that family member told others, and soon, a rumor spread that the bank was running out of money. Because of this rumor, people took out about 1.4 billion yen from the bank in two weeks. This almost made the bank go bankrupt. But the bank could survive by showing lots of cash at the counter and putting up signs telling people it was okay to take their money out.
